Shouldn't I be capable of making changes and moving forward without a coach?
Sure you are....in exactly the same way that you have the ability to keep all of your New Years Resolutions!!!! You have the ability because all of coaching is based on who you are and where you want to go and how you want to get there. What we’re going to be tapping into is already there. It’s discovering what’s beneath the busyness of everyday life. The question is, are you able to tap into it and maintain it on your own? Its like an athlete, they are amazingly skilled at their sport, a gymnast can complete all the moves. They know how it’s supposed to be done and it’s their ability that does it. Technically, they don’t need a coach but they do. They can’t be objective enough about their performance to become their very best without one. They need that other person cheering them on, picking them up, holding them accountable, keeping them moving. Somebody needs to keep reminding them of the gold medal because they can get so focused on the one thing in front of them they lose the big picture perspective. That’s how most of us are with life. We’re so focused on our responsibilities and deadlines that we forget to look up and over the thing that is right in front of us.
Is a lifecoach the same as a therapist or consultant?
Absolutely not! A therapist deals with areas of woundedness in your life. They help you look back and understand where those wounds occurred and how they effect you today. Their goal is to bring healing and function to that which has been hurt and dysfunctional. If there are unhealed wounds in your life I strongly recommend you see a professional therapist.
A lifecoach deals with people who are healthy and functioning but want to live up to their fullest potential. They help people understand and realize their dreams while maintaining their personal core values in the process.
A consultant is an expert in one specific field. They assess the situation, recommend a goal, a timeline and action steps. They are then removed from the process.
Lifecoaches are experts on process and that transfers to many fields. You are the expert on your life. Together we make an amazing team! Lifecoaches don't know all the answers but they do know the questions. You are in the drivers seat in this relationship. In a lifecoach you have an available, non-judgmental, totally committed cheerleader and guide. They will hold you accountable to goals YOU have set. Their whole agenda is helping you get where you want to go while maintaining the values and character and relationships that you desire to hold onto.
I don't live near a lifecoach. How can I have one?
80% of lifecoaching is done over the telephone. Many lifecoaches have clients on other continents let alone the next time zone! Coaching can be effectively accomplished by phone, email, ICQ or in person.
I'm not sure lifecoaching is for me? Can I check it out?
Have I got a deal for you! Your first 30-45 minute session is free. All your questions about lifecoaching can be answered. The lifecoach can determine if they are the best fit for you or if a referral would be in your best interest. You can decide if this is someone you want to work with.
How many sessions does it take?
I recommend that you make a 3-month commitment at first. As with many things, it is easy to start out strong and waver after a few weeks. That won't be helpful to you. A 3-month commmitment will get you over that hump and to the point that you can start to see the results. On the average, people work with a lifecoach for 6-8 months with follow-ups after that. Some people continue to work with their coaches for years.
But I don't like someone telling me what to do!
Very few people do. A coach does not tell you what to do. YOU are the EXPERT on your own life. We are partners in this process with you taking the lead. You decide what we talk about in each session. The coach asks the questions to help you see things from a new perspective, to see possibilities, to clarify who you are, what you want and how you want to get there.
Can I afford to be coached?
I’m not going to try to defend my price structure or convince you that this is cheap. It isn’t. I do believe it is worth what you are going to get out of it. If you decide to go for it, I really believe you will to. If it doesn’t then we’ll talk about it. You can quit at any time. This isn’t a legal contract that you can’t get out of or anything. Everybody decides where to put their money, where to invest it. This is a new option for you and I expect it feels difficult because it will displace money you normally put somewhere else. The thing is, where do you want to invest right now? Is this the time to invest in yourself? If not, when will it be?
Will I have the time to add one more thing into my life?
That’s a legitimate concern. This will take time. It will take time on the phone and it will take time for you to work on the goals that we set. Maybe a way we could deal with that would be in our first session to brainstorm ways you could redeem the time in another way. That way your life won’t be any busier but you can still have a coach. Who knows, you might even gain time if we come up with enough ideas!
Can anything change in MY life?
Think back one year. How many things have changed in your life in the past year? Is it a safe guess that just as many things will change in the next year? I’d like to see you be the one who decides on and creates some of those changes. They are going to happen anyway. Why should you go quietly along and adjust to changes all around you? Create some that are going to move you closer to the life you were created to have.
What if you haven't had the same life experiences I have had?
I haven't. As long as one of us is an expert we’re OK. You are the expert in your life, not me. Coaches aren’t playing on the field, they are working with the team who plays on the field. Not having had the same life experiences can actually be an advantage. I’m not going to struggle to put aside my preconceived biases because I don’t have any. What I’m an expert in, if you want to call it that, is in asking questions. I can usually ask the right questions and see the different possibilities for you to get from where you are to where you want to be. You make the decisions, not me. You choose the goals, not me. The expert is the one in control. You don’t need somebody who knows what you know, you need somebody who has a different perspective.
